Joey Bates
Joey Bates was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. He initially trained as a painter at Kendall College of Art and Design in the early 2000s. After graduation and some experimentation, Bates found a home in cut paper sculpture. It is his current medium of choice. His works have been exhibited in North America over the past twenty years and have been collected by collectors the world over. He currently resides in the Swedish countryside, just a few hours north of Gothenburg in a cabin on a canal with his dog, Kevin O’Connor.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Energy dispersal and change are the impetus for Bates’ recent works. Most pieces reference a volcanic explosion or amalgamation of explosions to recall disruption, destruction, and eventual renewal. The flowers lend a patina of beauty and ease to a process that is jarring, disorienting, and happening constantly — whether or not we are paying attention.
